A zero-emission aeroplane start-up has secured £17.6 million funding from investors including British Airways.Ìý
ZeroAvia, already backed by UK government, has now generatedÌý£38mÌýprivate fundingÌý– and £53.7m in totalÌý–ÌýtoÌýdevelop hydrogen-powered engines for aircraft.Ìý
The roundÌýwasÌýled by Horizons Ventures, with participation from Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Ecosystem Integrity Fund, Shell Ventures, Summa Equity and SYSTEMIQ, with BAÌýjoiningÌýas a new investor.Ìý
Based inÌýCranfield, Bedfordshire, and California,ÌýÌýZeroAviaÌýhas already secured experimental certificates for its two prototype aircraft from the CAA and FAAÌýandÌýclaims to beÌýon track for commercial operations in 2024.ÌýÌý
The company’s expanding UK operations are supported by grants from UK’s Aerospace Technology Institute and Innovate UK, andÌýZeroAviaÌýis part of the UK Government’s Jet Zero Council.Ìý
It isÌýinitially targetingÌýaÌý500–mile range in 10-20 seat aircraft used for commercial passenger transport, cargoÌýandÌýagriculture.Ìý

The new funding will allow it to launch the development program for a 2MW hydrogen-electric powertrain for full-size regional aircraft,ÌýacceleratingÌýthe larger hydrogen-electric engine development forÌý50+–seat aircraft.Ìý
