Deliveroo to bring 70 jobs to Scotland base

Takeaway app business Deliveroo has unveiled plans to expand its presence in the UK with its first base outside of London.

The news follows the acquisition of Edinburgh-based software design and development firm Cultivate.

Deliveroo said last year that it would use its new tech hub to create an improved payments system for riders and restaurants, provide better data and financial planning for riders and restaurants, and development improvements to cash flow for both.

At the time of the deal, its goal was to house 50 tech jobs in the new Scottish office within three years.

The London headquarter firm has now upped that target 70 roles including software engineers, product managers, data scientists, and designers during the next 12 months.

As part of its updated plan, its existing team 鈥 currently housed in Ediburgh鈥檚 technology incubator CodeBase 鈥 will be moved to a new HQ in April.

A wider variety of staff will also call the site home, the firm said.

Dan Winn, Deliveroo鈥檚 vice president of engineering, said: 鈥淭his is the company鈥檚 first UK tech office outside of London and reflects the strength of the tech sector and the scale of our ambition for Edinburgh.

鈥淓dinburgh is one of the UK鈥檚 fastest growing tech hubs, with access to an excellent talent pool of high skilled people and university graduates.鈥

The firm said at the opening of the HQ that it will support community initiatives supported by acquired firm Cultivate, including a Prewired, which helps young people learn to code.

Kate Forbes, the Scottish Government鈥檚 digital economy minister, added: 鈥淚 am pleased that Deliveroo has chosen Edinburgh as the base for its new flagship HQ, its first UK tech office outside of London.

鈥淭his brings exciting employment and digital skills opportunities, helping us achieve our ambition for Scotland to be a world-class digital nation.鈥
