First university coding bootcamp opens in UK

The University of Birmingham and Trilogy Education have partnered to offer the UK鈥檚 first university coding bootcamp.

The University of Birmingham Coding Bootcamp is a non-degree course teaching full stack web development that prepares adult learners and working professionals for careers in coding/web development.

Trilogy Education, based in the US, is a leading workforce accelerator that helps universities around the world offer skills-based training programmes.

鈥淏irmingham is quickly becoming a major technology hub attracting talent from across the country,鈥 said Professor Nicola Wilkin, University of Birmingham.

鈥淎s the leading higher education institution in the region, we want to ensure our city鈥檚 existing workforce has a pathway into the lucrative and fulfilling careers made possible by the growing technology sector.

鈥淭his is a fantastic opportunity for personal professional development. The flexible part-time format of the new University of Birmingham Coding Bootcamp makes it possible for people to diversify and develop the skills needed for alternate technical careers.鈥

Welcoming the announcement, Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street said: 鈥淚nitiatives such as this, where workers in the region can benefit from global expertise at one of our leading universities, are critical if we are to continue to grow the economy and the skills and spending power of the people who are rightly proud to call the West Midlands home.鈥

A basic understanding of programming is recommended for the programme but no previous training is required. All students are given pre-course tutorials to ensure they are ready to start learning on day one.

The 24-week programme begins in September 2019, and students will spend a minimum of 20 hours a week on outside projects.

They鈥檒l also build a professional project portfolio and receive career-planning services, portfolio reviews, recruiting assistance, and extensive staff support.
