Boldyn Networks and Virgin Media O2 have switched on a landmark 5G upgrade at Sunderland鈥檚 Stadium of Light, delivering what it is calling the UK鈥檚 first full neutral host RAN managed service in a high-density venue.
This means a single 5G network managed by London-based Boldyn that all mobile operators can use to give fans faster, more reliable connections in the 49,000-capacity stadium.
The rollout, part of the Sunderland Open Network EcosysTem (SONET) project, brings Boldyn鈥檚 connectivity-as-a-service (CaaS) platform to the newly-promoted Premier League side鈥檚 ground.聽
It comes shortly after The Black Cats announced their return to the country鈥檚 top division with an emphatic 3-0 opening day victory over West Ham United.聽
O2 customers are the first to benefit from the new infrastructure, with faster speeds expected to improve the way fans experience live sport.
The new system replaces a decade-old network and supports features from seamless video uploads to in-seat food ordering.聽
Visitors are expected to receive high-quality connections, personalised services and enhanced safety across the site.

Virgin Media O2 has been closely involved in the deployment and the project is one of several high-profile rollouts under SONET, which is backed in part by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.
Alongside the stadium, the initiative is also bringing advanced 5G to the new British Esports Arena as Sunderland pushes a wider digital transformation agenda.
