BBC to create 200 digital jobs at MediaCity

The聽BBC has announced it is hiring across聽200聽digital roles at BBC North in聽Salford as it continues to focus on聽broadcasting to a digital audience.

Key聽departments to welcome the聽new roles will聽include BBC Sport, Children鈥檚, Education, live events and the broadcaster鈥檚 Homepage and Content Discovery departments. The positions will聽range from聽product and project managers and聽engineers聽to UX designers.

Director General Tony Hall announced the corporation鈥檚 plans to stay relevant to a new generation and deliver a more personalised service earlier this week.

He also spoke on an extra聽拢34m for children鈥檚 services, with an enhanced online offering, which聽are to include聽new forms of content and interactivity.

鈥淭he BBC has a huge history of innovation 鈥 from colour TV to Ceefax, from BBC iPlayer to delivering world class live events online,鈥 said聽Matthew Postgate, BBC chief technology and product officer.

鈥淥ur team in Salford has already delivered audiences an award winning digital sport service, cutting edge innovation through our Research & Development teams and world-leading apps and digital services.

鈥淲e鈥檙e now going to reinvent the BBC for a new generation and we want the best team in Salford to help us get there.

The move will confirm the BBC鈥檚 position as one of the largest tech employers in the North, and comes alongside the news that it will also double its Software Engineering graduate programme.

Alice Webb, director of BBC Children鈥檚 and BBC North said: 鈥淲e have enjoyed strong growth since we opened here six years ago and we now produce around 35,000 hours of BBC content from Salford per year.
