UK users of Facebook Messenger will soon be able to send and receive money inside the popular app.
People will be able to add a payment card to their account then send and receive money directly inside conversations with contacts.
The feature has been available in the United States since 2015 but this is the first time the tech giant has rolled it out to another country.
鈥淥ur research shows the top reasons for sending money include celebrations, social and festive occasions,鈥 said head of Messenger David Marcus.
鈥淚t鈥檚 those everyday moments we鈥檙e trying to make a little easier 鈥 we鈥檝e seen that in the US most people use payments in Messenger to send less than 50 dollars at a time.鈥
Facebook said its AI assistant M would suggest the new option whenever the subject of payment comes up in a conversation.
The US-based firm said all credentials are encrypted and protected with 鈥榖ank-level security鈥 while payments would be monitored by anti-fraud specialists.
Messenger has more than 1.2 billion monthly users around the world.
